Methane is made by microbes in the rumen. As they ferment feed they release hydrogen, and other microbes turn it into methane the cow burps out, carrying feed energy with it. Same feed, same bottle. The only question is what the energy becomes.
Up to 12 percent of feed energy is belched out as methane. Pure loss to the farmer and to the climate.
Methane falls, but the same energy is released as hydrogen rather than milk. No extra milk, added cost for the farmer.
The energy is redirected into the animal. More milk and solids, over 80 percent less methane.
